Building a College Going Portfolio

q       UC Gateways is a portfolio system including both academic tracking and decision making tools. This system is available to students, parents, program staff, school personnel and community program staff.

q       A new system-wide organizational structure was created to support and sustain UC Gateways.  

q       There will be both a demonstration and a description of UC Gateways.

 

Abstract

UC Gateways is a system that allows students to build a college going portfolio that is designed to enable middle school and high school students to track their progress towards eligibility for the university.  In addition students may take a series of online surveys that allow them to understand their learning styles, their career interests and their personalities.

J. Michael Thompson, Associate Vice Chancellor of Outreach, Admissions, and Student Undergraduate Education, University of California at Santa Cruz

Michael Thompson has more than 25 years of experience in higher education. He has held leadership positions at a small private school, Loyola Law School, at a large public institution, UCLA, and two medium size public institutions, at UC Irvine and UC Santa Cruz. In his current role as Associate Vice Chancellor for Outreach, Admissions and Student Undergraduate Education at UC Santa Cruz, Michael manages the processes and activities that influence the size and characteristics of the undergraduate student body by directing institutional efforts in marketing, early academic development, recruiting, admissions, orientation and academic support services, student development, financial aid processing, and registration. He is also Executive Director of the UC Gateways project, a system wide initiative to support the college going aspirations of students across the state.
