 Services for Commuting Students

The Coordinator, Veronica Carter (617-627-3158), works closely with undergraduate commuters to provide information, programs, and support. Commuters are urged to get involved in the mainstream of campus social life. They are encouraged to attend residence hall events and residential students are urged to also attend events at Hillside House, the commuter center. In addition, Tufts offers a number of resources to make commuter life a little easier.

Off-Hill Council

Founded in 1963, the Off-Hill Council is the campus organization for commuters. The council coordinates academic, athletic, and other special activities for both commuting and residential students.

Hillside House
Hillside House, located at 32 Dearborn Road in Somerville and is staffed by two resident Co-Managers, is the headquarters of the Off-Hill Council and the center of undergraduate commuter life. Meetings are held at the house. Please check with Co-Managers for dates and times. The fifteen-room house has facilities for studying, cooking, recreation, programming, and occasional overnight stays. Please contact Veronica Carter for information about overnight stays.  It serves as a gathering place for undergraduate commuters both day and night and is probably the best location for keeping notebooks and belongings between classes or for studying with a friend. Hillside House is open whenever school is in session and everyone is welcome.

Eating on Campus
Most commuters eat their meals at Hillside House or at the Mayer Campus Center. Hillside House offers refrigerator space and cooking facilities, while cold beverages are available from vending machines. The Mayer Campus Center can provide complete cafeteria-style meals or supplement a meal brought from home. If you bring a lunch, there are plenty of good locations to eat outdoors in good weather.

Commuter Meal Plan
The dining halls offer an extraordinary opportunity to socialize and become better acquainted with campus life. Although few commuters eat exclusively in the dining halls, there are alternative meal plans for nonresidents available through Tufts Dining Services.  Please contact Dining Services at 89 Curtis Street to discuss your meal plan.
